New International Court of Justice (ICJ) Judge Elected-UN General Assembly and Security Council

Today, in simultaneous elections held at the General Assembly and in the Security Council, Jordan’s Mahmoud Daifallah Hmoud was elected to the International Court of Justice. He received 178 votes in the General Assembly and an absolute majority in the Security Council.

This was an uncontested election and was triggered by the resignation of Judge Nawaf Salam on January 14 2025.
Judge Salam resigned after being designated as Prime Minister of Lebanon.
Jordan nominated its Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Ambassador Mahmoud Hmoud, for a seat on the International Court of Justice (ICJ) to fill the vacancy created.
Judge Hmoud was Jordan’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations from 2021 to his election to the court.
